Ybor City 22 spots Tampa's National Historic Landmark District, built from 1886 by cigar factory owner Vicente Martinez Ybor to house his factories and the Cuban, Spanish and Italian workers who filled them. Seventh Avenue still runs on brick and wrought iron: a restaurant that opened as a corner saloon in 1905, a macaroni factory turned trattoria, cigar counters that serve Cuban coffee, and the breweries and late rooms that took over the warehouses. V.M. Ybor 1 spot The residential half of the cigar city, north of Ybor proper between I-275 and 15th Street, named for the same man. It is where the neighborhood actually lived, and where the bake house that has supplied Ybor's bread since 1915 still runs its ovens. Tampa Heights 16 spots Tampa's first residential suburb, platted in 1883 on the bluff north of downtown, and now the city's busiest food corridor. A 1910 streetcar repair shop is a food hall, the Ulele spring still runs beside the river, and the blocks around Ola Avenue hold more new kitchens than anywhere else in the city. Seminole Heights 16 spots Tree-shaded bungalow streets from the early 1900s that became Tampa's independent restaurant corridor, spread across Old, South and Southeast Seminole Heights. Florida Avenue and Nebraska Avenue carry the breweries, the barbecue and the small rooms that opened here because the rent was cheap and the porches were good. Downtown 13 spots The core between the Hillsborough River and the Selmon Expressway, taking in the Riverwalk and the Water Street district built beside it. Tampa's Michelin-starred tasting rooms, a pizzeria that ships its water from New York, the History Center cafe run by the Columbia family, and the hotel dining rooms along the water. Channel District 7 spots The old port warehouse blocks between downtown and Ybor, rebuilt into high rises, patios and the Florida Aquarium. Cargo ships and cruise ships pass at the end of the street, and the dining is what grew around them: a sushi room, a taqueria, a Greek restaurant and a tavern that predates all of it. Hyde Park 7 spots Tampa's oldest surviving neighborhood, across the river from downtown, with 1920s and 1930s houses under heavy oak shade and Hyde Park Village at its center. It holds an eight-seat tasting counter with a Michelin star, a bookshop and restaurant in an 1891 building, and the quieter rooms on Swann and Platt. SoHo 7 spots South Howard Avenue between Kennedy and Bay to Bay, the strip Tampa means when it says it is going out. A steakhouse with a wine cellar of half a million bottles, a hotel kitchen, taco counters, and the bars that keep the block busy until closing. Palma Ceia 17 spots Red brick streets and big oaks south of Bay to Bay, settled through the 1920s and still one of the most sought-after addresses in the city. MacDill and Henderson carry the neighborhood kitchens: a bakery that also runs dinner service, a Michelin Bib taqueria, a long-running pit barbecue, and the wine bars people walk to. Ballast Point & Interbay 5 spots The south end of the peninsula below Bayshore, from Ballast Point across Interbay to the Westshore Marina District at Gandy. Ballast Point pier and park date to an 1890s trolley line; the whole stretch eats the way you would hope on that water, with fish camps, lobster rolls, a beach bar and a British pub. Davis Islands 2 spots Two small keys at the mouth of the Hillsborough River, dredged into a neighborhood by D.P. Davis in the 1920s. The village strip is small enough to walk end to end, which is why the bakery and the bistro on it know their regulars. West Tampa 6 spots Incorporated as its own city in 1895 around its own cigar factories, and still a neighborhood of brick factory buildings, social clubs and corner stores. The Cuban sandwich shops here are the real ones, and the brewery that put Tampa on the craft beer map is on Spruce Street. North Hyde Park 4 spots The stretch between West Tampa and Hyde Park, just across the river from downtown, with cigar-era brick buildings along Howard Avenue and cracker houses behind them. Long overlooked, and now where a Michelin Bib Gourmand bakery and a sandwich counter both landed. East Tampa 3 spots The neighborhoods east of Ybor along Columbus Drive and Hillsborough Avenue, historically Black Tampa and still the address for the city's soul food and its barbecue pits. University Area 7 spots The stretch around USF and Fowler Avenue, north of the city limits, where the rents let a hot dog stand run since 1973 and a German beer hall run since the 1970s. It is also where Tampa's Asian markets and the room Skipper's Smokehouse built out of a bait shop sit. Forest Hills 1 spot North Tampa around Lowry Park and the zoo, quieter than the corridors either side of it, with the kind of neighborhood tavern people drive across town for. Virginia Park 1 spot A quiet South Tampa grid between Bay to Bay and Interbay, close enough to Palma Ceia to share its kitchens and far enough out to keep its own. Midtown Tampa 2 spots The mixed-use district built at Dale Mabry and I-275, and the older blocks around it, including the Sicilian bakery that has been on Cypress Street since 1912. Westshore 1 spot Tampa's office and hotel district between the airport and the bay, with the restaurants that serve it and a handful of long-running independents that were here first. Carrollwood 2 spots Unincorporated Hillsborough north of the city along Dale Mabry, built around its lakes from the 1950s. A suburb, and one with a brewery and chef-owned kitchens worth the drive. Temple Terrace 5 spots Its own city, wrapped by Tampa on three sides and laid out in the 1920s around a golf course and a grove of Temple oranges. Fowler and 56th carry an unusually deep run of immigrant kitchens: Nepali, Palestinian, Lebanese, Russian, Indian. New Tampa 1 spot The northeast corner of the city limits, out past Bruce B. Downs, developed from the 1980s. Mostly chains, which makes the independents that do open here worth naming. Town 'n' Country 2 spots The unincorporated stretch west of the airport toward the causeway, and one of the best places in Hillsborough County to eat food the roundups never cover: Vietnamese, Honduran, Filipino, Colombian, most of it in strip plazas. Citrus Park 2 spots Northwest Hillsborough around Gunn Highway and Ehrlich Road, named for the groves that were here before the subdivisions, with a few family kitchens holding their ground among the plazas. Westchase 2 spots The planned community at the county's northwest edge, and the surprise behind it: a Vietnamese farm, nursery and restaurant on a residential street where you can walk the grounds for free.
